Laurie was born in St. Louis, Missouri and grew up in Springfield, IL.  She went to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL and graduated in May 2009 with high honors and a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Laurie is certified to teach birth-third grade and has a special education approval for preschool. She was a part of Educ8kdz, at SIUC whose mission was to advocate for the whole child within the global community. In 2008, Educ8kdz raised money for schools that needed rebuilding in New Orleans and then worked in New Orleans for one week, to help rebuild many schools. Laurie has worked at numerous child development centers since she was nineteen years old. In college, she worked at the Child Development Lab on SIUC’s campus where she learned about the “Project Approach” and basing lessons on children’s strengths, needs and interests. During student teaching, Laurie taught eight weeks at the Child Development Lab and her remaining eight weeks in a first grade classroom in Anna, IL.  Upon graduating, Laurie moved to Missoula, Montana where she taught at a private preschool for three, four and five year olds creating a classroom environment that was enriched with literacy and promoted pre-reading skills.

Laurie joined Black Bear Academy in the summer 2010 where she attended presentations on Separation Anxiety, Movement across the Midline, Positive Reinforcement, Music, Literacy and Self-Esteem. She worked at BBA during the summer camp and is now a Lead Teacher in the 3’s-Mid Year Transition classroom.  When Laurie is not teaching she enjoys spending time with family and friends, running, spending time outside and going to concerts. Laurie is extremely excited to be a teacher at Black Bear Academy!
