The Black Bear Buddies program consists of groups of two to three children to facilitate social development and play skills. Students from our therapeutic program are grouped with neuro-typical peer volunteers from our LE and Academic programs for structured and play-based activities. These forty-five minute long sessions are facilitated by a speech-langugage pathologist to promote peer engagement and social interactions, as well as provide peer models for speech and language.
The goal of Black Bear Buddies is to build friendships, expose children to various forms of communication, and encourage success in social situations. Participating in Black Bear Buddies in conjunction with our classes and individual therapy services promote carryover of skills from individual to group contexts. Students in our Language Enrichment and Academic programs at Black Bear Academy are encouraged to participate in Black Bear Buddies by being a volunteer! Becoming a buddy benefits the social, communication, and cognitive development of all involved.
