Melanie completed her graduate externship practicum at Black Bear Academy in the fall of 2014 and was asked to rejoin the Black Bear team as a Speech Therapist in the summer of 2015! She grew up in the northwest of suburbs of Chicago and now lives in Fulton River District. Melanie received her B.A. from the University of Iowa. She majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders, minored in Psychology, and received a certificate in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Melanie then went on to get her M.S. in Communication Disorders and Science at Eastern Illinois University, where she was a graduate assistant to the department head.  Melanie’s previous clinical experiences include working in a child development center in Germany, supervising teenagers who stutter at UI SPEAKS summer camp, and working with Deaf and hard of hearing students at the Carle Auditory Oral School. She was also a research assistant at the University of Iowa’s Word Learning Laboratory.

During her time at Black Bear Academy, Melanie has participated in a variety of therapeutic classes, feeding therapy, and group classes including auditory processing and social language classes.  Melanie is ready for another fun and exciting year at Black Bear Academy!
