Kristen Vincent is an experienced speech-language pathologist and is the Director of Therapeutic Programs at Black Bear Academy!  Kristen moved to Chicago in June 2011 to join the Black Bear team!

Kristen is originally from Chicago but grew up in the Detroit suburbs. She moved to southwest Florida during high school. Kristen went to the University of Florida for her undergraduate studies in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and pursued a Masters degree in speech language pathology there as well. After living in Gainesville for school (Go Gators!), she moved to Tampa, FL where she lived and practiced as a certified and licensed pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist for 11 years. She worked in the public school-district and for a multi-disciplinary pediatric private practice in the greater Tampa Bay area. Over the years she had the opportunity to provide clinical services for children of carrying ages, in a variety of settings, and treated a variety of diagnoses, developmental delays and related communication disorders. In 2007, Kristen was asked to be a clinical director and opened a new branch of the business, which she managed for four years.

Kristen is proficient completing diagnostic testing, screenings, supervising and mentoring graduate students and new therapists. She has experience developing connections and rapport with schools in the community to support mutual students in their classroom settings. Kristen has been part of multidisciplinary teams and meetings to support the child-parent-teacher relationship while identifying and accommodating a child’s specific needs. She has assisted teachers with the modification and accommodation of lesson plans, learning environments and instructional methods required to help students succeed.

She has attended multiple professional development seminars at NAEYC and ASHA conventions. Kristen is participated in an ASHA self-study program, Early Childhood Development-Predictors of Future Communication Challenges. Recently Kristen attended the Social Thinking Conference: Collaborative and Proactive Solutions with Social Thinking to Teach Everyone New Skills. Kristen is a certified instructor of It Takes Two to Talk and More than Words, both Hanen Centre programs to educate parents about language facilitation. She recently took Hanen e-seminars: Teaching Tuning In: Practical Strategies to Promote Theory of Mind for Verbal Children on the Autism Spectrum; Telegraphic Speech: Should We or Shouldn’t We?; Taking Parent Coaching to the Next Level: Helping Parents Make Behavioural Changes That Stick! Kristen is also trained in the Orton-Gillingham method, a multi-sensory approach to phonemic awareness.
